Obsidian Farms

Obsidian Farms are significantly modified on Vanilla X, this is due to our fork of spigot causing withers to inexplicably lose their main head AI, causing farms to be inconsistent and break with no explanation.

Due to this, players need to understand how to deal with withers behaving this way.

Understanding Broken Withers

After extensive testing, there are a few ways to improve your chances of your Withers having AI and there are ways to deal with them even when they’re broken.

What works:

  • Be within 6 blocks of your wither when it spawns, I suggest standing above the cage to reduce the damage taken when they spawn, this improves the chances of your wither having AI.

  • Do not break the stonecutter you spawn the Wither on, if they do not have AI, they will stand on the stonecutter instead of falling, giving you a chance to force AI onto them.

  • If your wither is stood on a stonecutter with no AI, set a home within 6 blocks of the withers, and then unload the chunks by teleporting all accounts away from the withers. Once the chunks are unloaded, teleport to the home you set close to the Withers, repeat this until you get lucky and all the Withers have AI.

While these fixes are not great, they do allow you to still use Withers in the farms that absolutely need them.

In addition to these fixes, there is one final fix that I have integrated into my own Obsidian Farm, called boatfix.

Boatfix

Boatfix refers to tech that manipulates the facts that Boats are entities that have a hitbox, yet cannot be broken by Withers, providing a platform for them to stand on without breaking it.

While boatfix is a solution to the problem, it requires farms to be altered so that drops are not lost by falling onto the boats.

Building & Usage Tips

  • The farm needs to be built over an ocean and all caves must be flooded to ensure the nether portal spawns in the correct location.

  • The schematic should not be rotated.

  • The farm should not be unloaded while it is running.

  • An account needs to be mining snow at all times.

  • An account needs to be present in the nether at all times.

  • If the nether side runs out of obsidian to dispense, the farm will stop.
